The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
1(b) The teacher creates developmentally appropriate
instruction that takes into account individual learners’
strengths, interests, and needs and that enables each
learner to advance and accelerate his/her learning.
Here is an example of our current science packet about phase changes. In the inclusion classroom, the students are at different Lexile levels. The packets look similar and contain most of the same information, although some of the notes have been provided for them, articles already annotated, or a completely different reading (in terms of reading level). The current article on Boyle’s law was too high for most of my students so I included another reading on Boyle’s law at a slightly lower level. They are not turned away by the reading level and therefore invested in the learning experience. I have often times noted if a reading is too difficult instead of asking for help or clarification the student just shuts down. This helps to prevent these issues from happening and helps the students advance their learning.
